Senate panel: End ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’

WASHINGTON – A Senate committee on Thursday took a first step toward ending the policy that allows gays to serve in the military only if they don’t disclose their sexual orientation.

In a 16-12 vote, the Senate Armed Services Committee approved a provision to repeal the 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, the only Republican to vote for the amendment to a defense spending bill, said it passed after “vigorous and aggressive debate.”

STANFORD, California (Reuters) – Europe’s debt crisis shows the risks for the United States if it does not get its budget deficits under control, former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker said on Tuesday.

“If we need any further illustration of the potential threats to our own economy from uncontrolled borrowing, we have only to look to the struggle to maintain the common European currency, to rebalance the European economy, and to sustain political cohesion of Europe,” Volcker said.
